Dental Bridge

Illustration of jaw with dental bridgeThe advancements in dentistry have created many solutions to dental problems. Many patients lose teeth for various reasons, including gum infections, bacterial tooth decay, and dental plaque. Dental bridges can save you from the unavoidable embarrassment if you have lost your smile due to a missing tooth. Our surgeons at Surf City Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery recommend dental bridges to fill the gap between your healthy teeth.

What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are false teeth that create a bridge above your missing teeth sockets. Dentists recommend dental bridges when you have a few teeth missing between your healthy teeth to restore your lost smile and eating practices. Typically, the surrounding teeth support dental bridges to keep them fixed in their position.

Dental technicians use different materials to manufacture dental bridges. However, porcelain remains the standard choice due to its aesthetic resemblance to natural teeth.

What Are the Different Types of Dental Bridges?

The primary classification of dental bridges places them in four categories.

Traditional Bridges

The most common type of dental bridge is the traditional bridge. Dentists create these bridges by fixing dental crowns on the abutment teeth and placing a bridge in between. The fixed dental crowns hold the bridge in its place while you eat. While true, you may only be able to choose this type if both the abutment teeth are natural and healthy.

Cantilever Bridges

The cantilever dental bridge has similar properties to traditional bridges. The only difference between the two is the placement of a dental crown on abutment teeth. In cantilever bridges, you only need one natural abutment tooth on either side to support the dental bridge.

Maryland Bridges

Maryland dental bridges take inspiration from traditional bridging. However, this dental bridge type places a framework on abutment teeth to hold the bridge in its position. Typically, dentists use metal or porcelain to assemble the abutment framework. Like traditional dental bridges, Maryland bridges also require natural abutment teeth on both sides of the gap.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant-supported dental bridges are complex to install but offer excellent long-term durability. Dentists place these dental bridges by creating dental implants in the jawbone. It is worth mentioning that dental implants require surgery that may take a few months to heal. While this is true, the results may be better than the other dental bridge types.

Are Dental Bridges Covered in Insurance Plans?

Many dental patients ask if dental bridges are covered in insurance plans. Most insurance plans cover dental bridges. However, some plans may require you to pay separately for dental bridging procedures. If you opt for dental implants, you may have to bear the expenses.
