Recovery From Wisdom Teeth Removal Huntington Beach CA

Man sleeping to recover from wisdom teeth removal at Surf City Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Huntington Beach, CAThe extraction of your wisdom teeth is most often a surgical procedure. As with the recovery from any surgery, we recommend that our patients take a few days from their regular schedule to allow their body to heal. Proper healing is important for your health. Our staff at Surf City Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery are happy to discuss your post-op expectations in more specific detail with you during your consultation.

Recovery from your wisdom teeth extraction can vary depending on some details, such as:

•  Your personal pain tolerance.
•  How many wisdom teeth are being extracted.
•  How long the root had grown and if it had formed a hook.
•  Your personal age and health.

What to Expect Following Extraction

Most wisdom teeth extractions are performed by an oral surgeon, such as our office. This is because we are specially trained in anesthetics and surgical treatments. Your recovery time and post surgical discomfort can also be improved by having the work performed in the hands of someone with oral surgery expertise.

Following the extraction of your third row of molars, or wisdom teeth, you can expect:

Immediately Following Extraction

Before you leave the chair, we will provide you with some care instructions. At this point you will still be under the pain relief of whatever anesthetic we used and should not be in any pain. Your mouth will most likely be packed with gauze and there will be some bleeding. The amount of blood may appear to be a lot because it is mixed with your saliva, but it shouldn't be too much actual blood. Most of our patients feel mostly recovered from their wisdom teeth surgery in about three days. If your teeth were impacted or had been at an awkward angle, it could take longer, even up to a full week to recover.

It’s important to note that the wound won’t be completely healed for months. Our soft tissue heals quickly but bone tissue takes more time, so you can still develop an infection even weeks following surgery. We ask that you take care of yourself and pay attention to symptoms of trouble.

Days Following Extraction

Over the next several days, we want your body to take things easy to allow for better healing. You may want to take a couple of days off of work or school and ask other family members to help with any household chores. During your healing time, we ask that you abstain from strenuous exercise, drinking through straws, spitting, or any activity that could dislodge a clot. We also ask that you abstain from smoking as it can slow the healing process.

Healing is important. In addition to taking it easy, we want you to look for any signs of infection or trouble. This could include:

•  Unusual Bleeding
•  Numbness
•  Fever
•  Swelling that is not going down
•  Discomfort or pain that is not easing
•  Pus or other fluid leaking

If symptoms of infection arise, we ask that you seek immediate medical attention and then contact our office.
