Benefits of Dental Implants in Huntington Beach, CA

Diagram of a tooth replaced with a dental implantDental implants are a type of restorative procedure that places a synthetic tooth within the oral cavity, using the jawbone to hold the synthetic tooth in place. Many of our patients opt for dental implants because they feel the most natural in the mouth, and dental implants do not require any components that would make them feel alien in the patient’s mouth.

Surf City Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery wants our patients to understand the benefits of dental implants so they can decide whether they would be suitable for their next artificial tooth.

What Are the Benefits?

What many people find appealing about dental implants is their natural feeling. Implants are made of three components: the implant itself, the abutment, and the crown. The implant is placed into the jawbone, the abutment acts as a connector between the implant and the crown, and the crown is placed on the abutment.

There are no wires, brackets or plates. The implant acts and feels like a natural tooth. This is not only beneficial for how it feels within the mouth, but it also makes it simple for chewing and talking. Until our patients need to replace a dental implant, which happens after 25 years of continual use, the implant will have very minimal impingement upon their lives. The crown itself can be made of porcelain or resin. Both materials can be matched in color to the rest of the oral cavity, making the dental implant completely indistinguishable. Porcelain even gives off the same gleam as a tooth does, making it ideal crown material. Dental implants are non-removable, which means there is no risk of losing or damaging it. They are very resilient and strong, and they require no special cleaning or care. Unlike dentures, there is no risk of them slipping, and they do not need to be removed at night.

Can Anyone Receive Dental Implants?

Almost anyone can receive a dental implant. Patients who are completely healthy will almost always be good candidates for dental implants. Patients with severe illnesses, such as patients suffering from diabetes, may be unable to have a dental implant. After the surgery, the implant needs to fuse with the jawbone to create a sufficient foundation for the abutment and crown. Patients suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes may not have the healing potential to have a successful fusion between the jawbone and implant.

Patients with a lack of jawbone density in the area in which the implant is going to be placed can face complications. These are usually patients who have suffered serious repercussions of periodontitis and have experienced bone loss as a result. Dental implants need sufficient bone mass in order to become properly secured in the jawbone. In these cases, a bone graft can be used to encourage the development of bone mass, though it does add significant time to the treatment plan. Surf City Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery recommends the use of dental implants for their patients’ restorative procedures as dental implants look and feel like natural teeth. Our professionals can fit any number of dental implants and can discuss with you the different materials and treatment plans we offer.
